Couplet of Original Chung Chi Gate

The stone pillars were originally part of the College gateway at the Tai Po Road entrance. The gateway was rebuilt due to road expansion, but the College preserved its components and reassembled them as a sculptural installation in 2003 in the Palm Garden.

The two stone pillars now stand facing each other at a 90-degree angle, resembling a pair of lovers, supporting one another and remaining side by side by the lake. The sculpture’s Chinese name is崇聯. 崇is the first character of Chung Chi, and 聯 literally means “couplet”, a traditional form of Chinese literature. The word 聯 also plays on the homophone 戀, which means “love”, suggesting Chung Chi’s love, a name rich in sentiment and enduring affection.
