Soprano Miss Winnie Wei and pianist Miss Tu Yueh Sien performed in the College concert in 1961, which was broadcasted by Radio Hong Kong.

Chung Chi sees music as an integral part of nurturing well-rounded individuals. Since a choir was initiated in the early 1950s, the College has vigorously promoted music on campus by hiring the Director of College Choir, inviting teacher to give music lectures, arranging record music appreciation, screening music movies, inviting performances from renowned musicians, singers, orchestras, and choirs, and holding concerts.

In 1958, the first well-received public concert was organised by the Student Union. From then, Chung Chi organised annual public concert, where Chinese and Western music were performed. The College also formed a string orchestra in the early 1960s, further enhancing the musical atmosphere.

In 1963, the College invited Dr. Bliss M. Wiant, former head of the Department of Music at Yenching University and the editor of Hymns of Universal Praise, to lecture in Chung Chi. This has elevated the professionalism of Chung Chi’s music programme. The following year, President Yung Chi Tung announced the establishment of the Department of Music, to train church musicians and music teachers for local primary and secondary schools, and to promote and research Chinese music. Dr. David Sheng was appointed as the first Chairman of the Department.

The Department of Music of Chung Chi was officially established in 1965. The Department, which was first located in a classroom behind the Chapel, provided the first music programme for undergraduates in Hong Kong. Five freshmen were admitted in its founding year.
