“Shum Kai Wah Mainland Exchange Programme”: Cultural Exploration and Workplace Experience in Shanghai (2025)

 

Chung Chi College, in collaboration with the Chung Chi College Alumni Association and CUHK Alumni Association in Shanghai, will host the “Shum Kai Wah Mainland Exchange Programme”: Cultural Exploration and Workplace Experience in Shanghai during the coming summer of 2025. This programme aims to help students gain a better understanding of the society, lifestyle, and business culture of the Mainland. This initiative is sponsored by the “Shum Kai Wah Albert Memorial Fund” which was established in memory of the late Chung Chi alumnus Mr. Albert Shum (1973/Economics) by his family and classmates. The programme also receives support from the Yangpu District Government of Shanghai, which is assisting in coordinating the company visits and workplace experience opportunities.

 

Date

May 25, 2025 (Sunday) to June 28, 2025 (Saturday) for 5 weeks:

  • Cultural Exploration and Company Visits: May 26 (Monday) to June 1 (Sunday)
  • Workplace Experience: June 2 (Monday) to June 27 (Friday)
  • Closing Ceremony: June 26 (Thursday)

 

Quota

  • 30 Chung Chi students;
  • Participants will engage in a four-week workplace experience and thus have to speak fluent Putonghua, as well as read and write in Chinese.

  • Date: February 18, 2025 (Tuesday)

 

Programme Highlights

  • Participants will be organized into groups and assigned to about 20 companies in Shanghai for a four-week workplace experience aimed at understanding the business practices and culture. The companies will span various industries, and the College will match participants with the companies based on their career orientation and interests. As this programme is designed to provide “workplace experience,” the companies and roles assigned may not be necessarily align with participants’ majors. The tentative list of internship companies can be found on this webpage;
  • Participation in seminars, group discussions, and visits to business and universities in Shanghai;
  • Opportunities to share experience with CUHK alumni working in Shanghai;
  • Visit to economic and infrastructure projects in Shanghai or its surrounding cities;
  • In the first week, participants will be divided into groups for discussion and presentations during debriefing sessions following daily visits. After the programme concludes, participants are required to submit both group and individual reports on their workplace experiences;
  • A Closing Ceremony will take place on June 26 (Thursday), where participants will present and share their experience in groups during the dinner.
  • Eligible students may enroll in the College upper-year General Education course GECC3130 “Exploration and Discovery” (E&D, 3 credits).

 

Programme Fee

  1. HK$5,000 per participant (This includes round-trip flight tickets between Hong Kong and Shanghai on a designated date, accommodation, workplace experience opportunities, seminars, and business visits in Shanghai during the programme. However, meals, local transportation, and other expenses during the programme will not be covered.)

 

  1. HK$3,600 per participant (Same as above EXCEPT round-trip flight tickets between Hong Kong and Shanghai.)

 

Remarks:

  1. A programme deposit of HK$500 per participant is required. This deposit will be returned after group and individual workplace experience reports are submitted;

 

  1. Participants who hold a Hong Kong or Macau Permanent Identity Card and a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents (Home Return Permit) will receive a meal and local transportation allowance from the Shanghai Yangpu People’s Government during the working days of the programme. The details are as follows:

 

  • If internship companies do not provide any allowances (such as salary, meals, or transportation), the government will subsidize RMB80 per working day for meals via the Meituan App and RMB20 per working day for transportation using the Shanghai Public Traffic Card, totaling an allowance of RMB100 per working day.

 

  • If internship companies provide an allowance under RMB100 per working day, the government will subsidize the difference to bring the total to RMB100. If the allowance provided by the companies exceeds RMB100, the government will not off any additional allowance.

 

  • The College will collect the details of the participants’ ID Cards and Home Return Cards, which will be submitted to the Shanghai Yangpu People’s Government for the abovementioned allowance. The government will determine the final payment amounts and timelines, and provide subsidies to eligible participants based on their weekly work attendance.

 

  1. For other students who do not hold the two documents listed in item b) above, they will receive the same amount of meal and transportation allowance sponsored by “Shum Kai Wah Albert Memorial Fund”, with a maximum total of RMB100 allowance per person per working day. The rules, form, timelines and amounts of the allowance will be in accordance with the arrangements of the Shanghai Yangpu People’s Government.
