In the realm of theatrics, makeup transcends its traditional role as decoration, and gives stage characters life and personality. That is a big part of why Leung Yuk Yin, a junior from the early childhood education programme, began a new chapter in her creative journey with the Chung Chi Drama Club. In CUHK, she finally finds a platform to showcase her love for makeup.

Q: How did you get your start in the theatrical makeup?

I discovered my interest towards makeup in junior high, but I wasn’t really able to develop much out of it because my parents were rather strict. Then in university, I was able to further my makeup skills in the theatre. Tips for theatrical makeup are not particularly accessible on the internet, so I have mainly been learning from our team, under the guidance of makeup professionals. This has not only improved my technical skills in this field, but also made me fall head over heels for the stage.

Q: What inspires you in the creative process?

I had the honour of being awarded Best Costume Design for a drama in CU Drama Competition 2023. The entire costume and backdrop were inspired by yarn, which symbolised the connection between characters. Throughout the creative process, we worked closely as a team to make sure the costumes corresponded to the script. We chose specific colours for each of the characters: purple for the gentle souls, and orange for out-going personalities. Designs from other teams showed great artistry, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much the judges appreciated our relatively casual style.

Wishing to pursue a career in early childhood education after guaduation, Yoyo still wants to work as a freelance makeup artist.

Q: Can you tell us about your training and experience?

These two years have been truly inspiring. Each person in the team does their very best, and newer members can always join in on whichever project as long as they are willing. Nobody would question your qualifications, and we are all welcome to try new things. I hope more new students would participate in our projects, so that they could expand their knowledge and make friends from different colleges. This would definitely make university life more colourful.

Yoyo practised well under the guidance of makeup professionals and has been able to provide theatrical makeup for drama club members since then.

Q: What are your plans in the makeup industry?

I adore kids, so I still plan to pursue a career in the early childhood education field. At the same time, it would be nice to work freelance in makeup. Although wedding makeup is a more lucrative business in Hong Kong, I am not as interested in the commercialised lines of work. My passion lies in art, and I want to create unique makeup looks.
